presented at the 2011 conference on human factors in computing systems, 'zerotouch' by texas A&M university's interface ecology lab is a screenless, transparent multi-touch display that uses infrared sensors to detect user input.

'zerotouch' implements 256 IR sensors, so that user input is visualizable as points on a matrix of lines. while the novelty of the device is the ability to move one's hands 'through' the screen and interact freely in the air, 'zerotouch' can also be mounted over a traditional computer screen, effectively turning it into a multitouch surface.

A l'occasion de la Journée Mondiale de l'Eau le 22 mars prochain, Solidarités International et BDDP Unlimited lancent une campagne pour sensibiliser au fléau de l'eau insalubre. On estime aujourd'hui que 3,6 millions de personnes décèdent chaque année des maladies hydriques provoquées par l'eau insalubre, dont 1,5 millions d'enfants de moins de 5 ans, ce qui en fait la première cause de mortalité au monde. Pour symboliser le danger silencieux et invisible de l'eau insalubre, BDDP Unlimited a choisi un parti pris à la fois minimaliste, esthétique et étonnant jouant exclusivement avec de l'eau et de l'encre. Le film illustre la capacité de l'encre à révéler ce qui est invisible. Imaginé par BDDP Unlimited, ce film a été produit par Hush et réalisé par Clément Beauvais, jeune réalisateur, illustrateur, musicien et photographe. Sa palette de talents et sa maîtrise de différentes techniques lui ont permis à la fois de concevoir les dessins et la réalisation du spot. Un site internet votregouttedeau.org recueille les signatures de la pétition destinée à êtres remise en mains propres au Président de la République lors du 6ème forum Mondial de l'Eau en mars 2012.

an interactive immersive environment, 'peasouper' was created by uk-based jason bruges studio exclusively for the yota space digital art exhibition in st. petersburg, russia.

mages of visitors are rendered in four fog-filled transparent tanks lining the center of the space. lit in different colours, these tanks replay the footage on a time delay from one another, so that a visitor moving through the space continues with each step to see his actions repeated in front of him.

the fog not only creates an ethereal, distorted silhouette but also generates a more three-dimensional impression of the images. the effect suggests the experience of wandering through the 'pea soup fog' of london, encountering through the cloudy air the broken lightbeams and blurry visages of passers-by.

'link' creates a constantly evolving city of paper boxes,
each filled with the face and story of a different visitor to the installation space.

juxtaposing technology and simple materials, the bounds of the private and public spheres,
and the ideas of viewer and creator, the interactive installation was designed and created by
by kimchi and chips, the collaborative studio of london-based technical designer elliot woods
and seoul-based artist mimi son.
adopting the form of a miniature cityscape,
the sculptural component of the project involved stacking and arranging 400 cardboard boxes.
the design team developed their own projection mapping software
to flexibly accommodate the large number of surfaces,
so that each box is capable of projecting a unique video feed from one of six projectors,
linked to three media servers.

to engage viewers as participants in the piece, a series of kiosks lines the border of the installation.
here, interacting with a touchscreen device and videocamera, anyone can record a video of herself,
which is then saved and replayed on boxes throughout the work.

the changing faces and constant activity of the piece
recall the movements and encounters of people in real cities,
and raise questions of memory and its relative permanence
in an increasingly digital society.

the designers express the foundational goal of the project
as 'bringing developing technologies together with everyday materials,
and bringing people together to share their stories and presence'.

Editor's note: Pixar's films have always been very important in my life. I was 6 years old when I watched Toy Story the first time, and his films made my childhood more happy. So this video is a personal tribute for, in my opinion, the best animation studio of all time.

This year's titles for FOTB were created by Nando Costa through the use of macro motion pictures and materials with magnetic properties.
The choice of materials was driven by the desire to graphically represent the concepts of attraction and repulsion. The idea that graphic artists of all sorts attend events such as FOTB because they are inspired and therefore attracted to each other's work, while at the same time often competing in the same fields as peers, which represents the repulsion factor.

‘panoptICONS’ addresses the fact that you are constantly being watched by surveillance cameras in city centres. The surveillance camera seems to have become a real pest that feeds on our privacy. To represent this, camera birds - city birds with cameras instead of heads - were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on our presence. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.

The first Short Stories film, by renowned photographer and bodyboarder Mickey Smith, explores his world as a true waterman - both as an athlete and artist, and is called The Dark Side of The Lens.

"Originally I planned for the film to be more anonymous, rather than biographical, an all encompassing piece, to represent the photographers keeping the surfing machine afloat", explains Smith.

Something that offers insight into what it takes to grind out a living as a water-based photographer in the surfing industry: a short experimental glimpse at a life lived in the shadow of obsessive photographic pursuits."

"It also gave me the chance to ask myself a few questions, like, if you're always observing and documenting what you see and experience, are you ever truly present? Questions like that where I could step back think and then see what the answers were", Smith says.

As well as documenting various voices and experiences across surf photography, Smith worked with Allan Wilson from the Astray Collective, who acted as Director of Photography on the project. Together they logged hours of footage across the Atlantic coastline, traveling around Ireland, Cornwall and Manchester. Shot in Super 16mm film, as well as groundbreaking work with Canon 5D mk11 Digital SLR, Smith also projected images of the huge walls of water within which he works, on to monster urban landscapes such as sky rises and castles in Manchester, as well as the cliff lines at his home of Ireland

This film explores playful uses for the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world.

We use photographic and animation techniques that were developed to draw moving 3-dimensional typography and objects with an iPad. In dark environments, we play movies on the surface of the iPad that extrude 3-d light forms as they move through the exposure. Multiple exposures with slightly different movies make up the stop-frame animation.

By combining a recently developed mobile software application with the multimedia facade of the ARS Electronica building we intend to lower participation barriers for end users when interacting with such facades.
We developed two prototypes: in the first application, users can paint interactively on the building using touch input on the mobile device. In a second application, users are able to solve a jigsaw puzzle displayed on the facade.
iRiS (Immediate Remote Interaction System) is a joint research project from the University of Saarbrücken, Germany and University of Munich, Germany.

Zimoun's sound sculptures and installations are graceful, mechanized works of playful poetry, their structural simplicity opens like an industrial bloom to reveal a complex and intricate series of relationships, an ongoing interplay between the «artificial» and the «organic». He is interested in the artistic research of simple and elegant systems to generate and study complex behaviours in sound and motion. ‘YEKPARE’ (monolithic)

Yekpare is a story teller to narrate 8500 years story of Istanbul. The story has symbols by from Pagans to Roman Empire, from Byzantine Empire to Latin Empire, and finally from Ottoman Empire to today’s Istanbul.

A building which we play on is Haydarpaşa Train Station has brilliant Gothic architectural forms. Connection between middle east to west as Istanbul since 1906 was formed by Haydarpaşa. In 50’s; it was a door millions of emigrant. Internal migration triggered chaotic order of Istanbul dialectical daily life scenes. Either its conceptual and political and geographical position or its location’s depth of field to watch the entire show from Kadıköy coast; Yekpare is dramatic as a representation.

First day of the performance is also 47th death day of famous Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet Ran. We started with his quote:“At Haydarpaşa Train Station, in the spring of 1941, it is three o’clock. Sun, exhaustion and rush lay on the stairs” (from his epic novel Human Landscapes from My Country).

The Durex baby case was created by Art Director: Nicolai Villads, Peter Ammentorp and interactive designer: Raul Montenegro for the Future Lions 2010 competition (www.futurelions.com) organized by digital agency AKQA and Cannes Lions Advertising festival.

The footage was recorded with the Canon 5D MKII using a 24-105 mm. 4,0. and a 50 mm. 1,4. The baby was created by Raul Montenegro using Z-brush and cinema 4D. Post in After Effects and final edit in Final Cut Pro 2

yesyesno took the idea of shadow puppets in front of a night light and turned it into a full scale
installation projected onto the side of the auckland ferry building. the installation was produced in collaboration with the church, inside out productions and electric canvas. going beyond a simple projection, ‘night lights’ turns viewers into performers, projecting their shadows and blowing them up five stories tall. viewers could interact with the project on three levels, using the whole body, just their hands and through tracking the movement of mobile phones. the users created shadows which were overlaid on top of a series of 6 different scenes that cycled through every hour. http://yesyesno.com

Murmur Study is an installation that examines the rise of micro-messaging technologies such as Twitter and Facebook’s status update. One might describe these messages as a kind of digital small talk. But unlike water-cooler conversations, these fleeting thoughts are accumulated, archived and digitally-indexed by corporations. While the future of these archives remains to be seen, the sheer volume of publicly accessible personal — often emotional — expression should give us pause.

This installation consists of 30 thermal printers that continuously monitor Twitter for new messages containing variations on common emotional utterances. Messages containing hundreds of variations on words such as argh, meh, grrrr, oooo, ewww, and hmph, are printed as an endless waterfall of text accumulating in tangled piles below. The printed thermal receipt paper is then reused in future projects and exhibitions or recycled.

The latter half of the 20th century saw the built environment merged with media space, and architecture taking on new roles related to branding, image and consumerism. Augmented reality may recontextualise the functions of consumerism and architecture, and change in the way in which we operate within it.

A film produced for my final year Masters in Architecture, part of a larger project about the social and architectural consequences of new media and augmented reality.
